MedPlus Chosen as an Implementation and Optimization Organization by the Massachusetts e-Health Institute Regional Extension Center

Enrolled Physician Providers to be Offered Benefits of Care360 EHR

November 18, 2010

MedPlus, the healthcare information technology subsidiary of Quest Diagnostics (NYSE: DGX), has been designated an Implementation and Optimization Organization (IOO) and Preferred Electronic Health Record (EHR) vendor by the Massachusetts e-Health Institute (MeHI) Regional Extension Center (REC).

MeHI was designated by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick as the REC for the commonwealth, and was awarded $13.4 million in federal stimulus funding to assist physicians and other healthcare providers make the transition to an EHR. The REC will provide federal incentives for 2,500 primary care physicians by January 31, 2011. MeHI is also the designated Health Information Exchange (HIE) for Massachusetts.

For MedPlus, the ISO and Preferred EHR designation in Massachusetts means that the company completed a rigorous qualification and certification process to meet the detailed requirements of MeHI, and has committed to providing EHR installation, implementation and training for physician providers in Massachusetts.

After completing the required MeHI REC provider enrollment process, physicians will be eligible to receive EHR implementation and consulting services from MedPlus, directly paid for by MeHI to provide additional assistance in successfully transitioning to an EHR.

As the IOO, MedPlus will then support the practice in achieving the benefits of an EHR and Meaningful Use incentives. Under this program, MedPlus will deliver the following services: Consulting and Planning, Implementation and Project Management, Practice and Workflow Redesign, Infrastructure and Security, System Procurement and Installation, Coordination of Training, Post Implementation Support and Optimization of Meaningful Use.

Physicians will be offered Care360 EHR, a web-based, modular ambulatory solution that allows physicians the flexibility to adopt the features they want at their own pace. Care360 EHR has capabilities including electronic lab order management, clinical messaging, ePrescribing, encounter documentation, document management and multi-system interoperability.

"We are pleased to have MedPlus join our list of selected health IT companies that will help thousands of health care providers across Massachusetts successfully transition to electronic health records," said Rick Shoup, Ph.D., Director of the Massachusetts e-Health Institute. "Widespread deployment of EHRs leads to better quality care for patients, reduces healthcare costs and spurs new jobs in the health care industry."

“This partnership with MeHI is an exciting new chapter for MedPlus heading into 2011, said Richard A. Mahoney, vice president of Healthcare Information Solutions for Quest Diagnostics and president of MedPlus, its healthcare information technology subsidiary. "It’s another positive step forward to continuing our mission of providing flexible technology that lets physicians choose the functionally they want when they want it, while supporting their efforts to achieve Meaningful Use, and ultimately receive ARRA incentives.”
