Quality Assurance Engineer/Load, Interface & Automation

Job Summary:

A well blended engineer with multiple strengths will find this technical QA position to be challenging and rewarding. Reporting directly to the QA Lead of performance testing and test automation, this position spans a variety of technical responsibilities. Top among these responsibilities are hands-on load, performance, interface and integration testing across multiple Medplus products. This engineer will also support the building out and maintenance of a robust enterprise testing tool set, support test automation efforts, and will be looked to for innovative solutions to challenging test projects. Enthusiasm to “work smarter, not harder” will be a key factor in the success of this position.

Principal Responsibilities:

Execute load and performance tests against web-based applications, web service interfaces, and back-end server components.
Interpret test documents and identify appropriate test solutions. Setup and execute tests to specifications. Document test results, identify and report defects, perform re-testing to ensure defects are properly resolved.
Work with individuals and teams from various groups to gather and document system requirements related to performance, load, and product interfaces. Assist with creation of test plans to capture test requirements, assumptions and test conditions.
Identify production metrics important to performance/load testing efforts; assist with collection methods where feasible.
Provide technical assistance to interface and system integration test efforts across Medplus systems.
Assist with development and maintenance of enterprise test tool set. Identify and evaluate tool solutions to meet test needs. Support tools and test infrastructure to ensure efficient, reliable operation.
Support test automation efforts. Provide scripting resource for focused, well-defined high-value projects. Provide technical support to resolve tool issues. Evaluate and/or develop secondary assets to support primary test automation tools.
Identify innovative uses of automation throughout the testing process. Plan and effectively implement solutions.
Participate in the review of new product requirements. Provide constructive feedback about the consistency and depth of the requirements related to performance, load, and interface implementations.
Define, develop and execute test strategies considering risk and cost of testing. Support the creation of project plans and activities that track progress against those plans.
Assist QA Lead with other tasks related to load testing and automation.
Report status to QA Lead, Product QA Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate should have professional experience with load and performance testing in an enterprise environment. Testing experience in a multi-tiered, web-based environment is a plus.
Basic understanding of network, database, and server operation as they relate to load testing. Familiar with high level design, operating characteristics and test points of multi-tiered, web-based application
Experience developing and executing automated tests.
Experience with functional and/or load testing of web services is a plus
Ability to understand architecture of products and subsystems. Able to identify and describe major components and public interfaces. Able to work with technical resources from other groups to identify critical system interface and integration test points, and translate into measurable test requirements.
Previous programming experience using: VB.Net, Java, C++, or C#, C. Some scripting experience in KSH/Perl/Python/VBScript may be helpful.
Familiarity with SQL/Oracle databases. Previous experience with TOAD is a plus.
Candidate should have basic working knowledge of UNIX/Linux/Windows.
Knowledge of HTTP/S, HTML, XML, JMS, SOAP/web services
Knowledge of HL7, NCPDP, 270/271 messaging formats is a plus
Familiarity with Apache, Weblogic, JRockit, and/or RedHat is a plus.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Good oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least 1 year experience executing software load and performance testing in an enterprise environment.
1 year experience developing and executing automated test assets.
1 year programming experience using VB, .NET (C# or VB), C, C++, Java, or other popular programming language. Perl/Python/JavaScript scripting experience may be considered equivalent.
Comfortable with Unix/Linux/Windows operating systems.
Bachelor's degree in computer science/information systems or equivalent degree or experience.
Two years of experience in a formal QA role, or equivalent experience.
