Unix Administrator

Job Summary:

The Unix System Administrator will work with a technical team to support a computing environment comprising a mixture of Unix and Win2K servers. The environment supports the quality control (QA) for a variety of web-based applications supporting the healthcare industry. Candidate will be responsible for system administration functions ranging from the daily monitoring of servers and application services to in depth application troubleshooting. He/She will be required to carry a pager and take lead on rotational basis.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Assist in system administration with focus on base OS and third party applications (Weblogic, Oracle, eGate, etc.)
  • Must be willing to learn new applications as necessary to provide operational support as new projects are implemented.
  • Assist in system administration support for HPUX, LINUX, and Solaris Servers.
  • Assist in hardware installation and support for HP, Dell, IBM, and Sun, platforms.
  • Assist in server side SAN administration.
  • Assist in Data Center operation to include hardware upgrade and installation, cabling, and racking.
  • Must be willing to assist in system environments as needed.
  • Must be willing to rotationally carry a pager, be on call 24x7 and respond to alerts

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have expertise with most aspects of UNIX systems administration; for example, 3rd party application installation and administration, system installation and configuration, patching or kernel tuning, fundamentals of system security.
  • Must have a solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; understand paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, filesystem concepts ("inode", "superblock").
  • Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environment concepts; understanding of basic routing concepts.
  • Experience working with cluster software (HP Service Guard, Veritas Cluster Server, and EMC SAN/NAS interoperability.
  • Experience with backup applications such as NetBackup, BackupExec, and Legato a plus.
  • Experience with Database technologies (Oracle, MS-SQL, mySQL)
  • Experience with monitoring software (Big Brother, HP Openview, BMC Patrol).
  • Ability to program in one or more scriptiong languages (Tk, Perl, a shell).
  • Strong UNIX System administration skills in Solaris, HPUX, and LINUX.
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and completely.
  • Ability to identify tasks which require automation and automate them.
  • WinNT/Win2k system administration a plus.
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills; making presentations to an internal audience, and interacting positively with upper management. Independent problem solving; self-direction.
  • Experience in a production 24x7x365 operation desired.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science preferred or equivalent on-the-job experience.
  • Minimum of five years of experience Unix administration in a 24x7 production environment.
