Senior Database Engineer - Portal Performance
Job Summary:
The Senior Database Engineer will be primarily responsible for tuning and performance in a multi terabyte Oracle database. A strong background in tuning, tracing, creating indexes, etc in an Oracle database is desired. The Senior Database Engineer may assist other DBA groups with load testing, designs, relational databases, strategies for data acquisitions, implementation of databases, solution testing, etc. The use of AWR reports, OEM, Statspack, tracing, partitioning, stored outlines, and other methods to assist the various teams in tuning the database will be critical.
A successful candidate will have 8 years of experience in the design and implementation of large-scale, mission-critical transaction oriented databases. Programming skills are desirable. Must be able to work in a fast paced, production atmosphere. Excellent communication skills and teamwork required.
Responsibilities:
- Trace application sessions and tune or make recommendations.
- Make recommendations for the database design including indexes, partitioning methods, parallel queries, etc.
- Manage and possibly create new databases for load testing as required.
- Synchronize changes between development and testing databases.
- Provide space estimates including analysis of database objects.
- Provide SQL assistance and advice.
- Develop stored procedures, functions and triggers. May include coding of products that sit on top of an Oracle database.
- Create and test migration scripts as required.
- Create documentation as required including diagrams and documentation explaining the database, relationships and other structures.
- Stay current with emerging database technologies.
- Provide DBA services to internal clients. Interact with the Professional Services Group (PSG); assisting with scripts/queries as requested / required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of the concepts and best practices applicable to administration of large and high volume database management systems.
- Able to provide best practices recommendation towards the improvement and scalability of the application design.
- Ability to identify performance bottlenecks and implement solutions to improve the throughput and response time.
- A good working knowledge of Unix and awareness of the OS performance metrics and their relationship to the database performance.
- Ability to write scripts using shell scripting language and PL/SQL.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Oracle Certified Professional, 9i or greater. MCDBA a plus.
- Demonstrated experience in following areas is preferred: application development, hardware and software evaluation, capacity planning, application integration, data modeling, data warehouse design, and database reorganization.
- Experience working with an ISP/ASP desirable.
- Experience with clustering and Oracle RAC preferred but not required
- UNIX (HPUX, LINUX) and Win2k system administration a plus.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BSEE/BSCS or other technical degree preferred, equivalent on the job experience might be acceptable.
- Must have a minimum of 8 years administering Oracle databases with at least 3 years of 24x7 production support experience.
- Extensive experience with DB Performance tuning is required.
- Database capacity planning.
- Project management skills a plus.
