Physician HIT (EHR) Incentives

As eligible professionals (EPs) under Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Meaningful Use rules, physicians have the opportunity to invest in a certified electronic health record (EHR*) system using ARRA Stimulus dollars.

If you are a physician interested in pursuing an EHR implementation, you can maximize the incentive payments you receive by getting an early start. Beginning in 2011, EPs will be eligible to receive up to $44,000 over five years of participation. Incentives decrease beginning in 2013 and end in 2016. You must begin by 2014 in order to receive any funds.

Keep in mind, that all incentive payments are contingent upon your Meaningful Use of the EHR.

Physician HIT EHR Incentives Chart

Penalties for non-adoption and active Meaningful Use deployment of an EHR start in January 2015 by reductions of up to 1% in your Medicare reimbursement. This increases to 3% by 2017.

Be aware that the amount of your incentive is based on your fee-for-service allowable charges.
